By basic definition, narcolepsy is a dysfunction of the sleep center that causes spells of fatigue even after a full night’s sleep. As a result, those with the disorder can feel constantly sleepy and suffer from sleep attacks. Narcolepsy can present with or without cataplexy, a form of sleep attack that can occur when a patient loses muscle tone from, for examples, laughing or feeling anger. These attacks can cause a patient to collapse and often look like fainting or a seizure.
